Groundwork:
With Patchwork

A Service Partnership: Coming Soon

The Process

Mutual Healing

Serving animals at our partner rescue offers a reflection for healing moral injury. Through the non-judgmental presence of these horses, we learn to ground ourselves and regain trust, finding quiet space for spiritual renewal. This partnership creates a sanctuary where recovery is a shared journey between human and horse.

Ways to Volunteer

Barn Crew

Bless these animals by tending their stalls, helping the partner rescue maintain a clean and safe home for their rehabilitation.

Feeding & Care

Help the partner rescue team with meal prep and distribution to ensure their rescued residents receive daily nourishment.

Farm Support

Lend your hands to land upkeep and small repairs, helping our partner rescue keep the sanctuary beautiful for all who visit.

Groundwork: Support & Partnership

What is the Groundwork program?

Groundwork is a volunteer initiative where Patchwork partners with a local horse rescue. During our retreats, we visit their facility to serve their animals, allowing us to find peace and purpose in a ranch setting while supporting their mission of animal care and restoration.

Who is Groundwork for?

Groundwork is for adults carrying heavy stories—caregivers, ministry leaders, first responders, and veterans. You don’t need to be okay to join us; you just need a willing heart to serve and a deep respect for the horses in the rescue’s care.

What do volunteers actually do with the horses?

We assist the rescue staff with daily tasks like feeding, hauling grain buckets and totes of hay, mucking stalls, scrubbing troughs, raking, and shoveling. The work is humble but sacred.

Do I need horse experience to volunteer?

No experience is needed. The partner rescue team and our staff will guide you through specific tasks that match your comfort level. You will always be supervised while learning how to support these animals.

How much time do I need to commit?

Most serve 2–3 hours twice a week during a retreat. If you are unsure of your capacity, we will start small and adjust together, ensuring your service at the partner ranch fits your current energy and spirit.

Is it safe to work around rescue horses?

Safety is essential. We only participate in activities approved by the partner rescue for our skill levels, following their barn rules strictly. You will never be asked to do anything you aren't trained for or comfortable with performing.

How does faith show up in Groundwork?

As a Christian ministry, we view this as “rescue-to-rescue” work—God’s grace touching both horse and human. After our time serving at the partner rescue, we may offer prayer, Scripture, or reflection, though participation is always invited, never forced.

How do I get started or ask more questions?

Connect with us through our Held Retreats interest form or our contact page. We will share more about our upcoming partnership with the rescue and help you discern if this volunteer service is the right next step for you.
